The Star Schools

Each of the Saint Paul Star High Schools is creating an important model for small school excellence. Together, they are also creating a highly innovative collaborative model that will strengthen their academic programming and reduce administrative costs. By pooling their resources, the star schools will spend less money on routine business operations. This will mean more money for programs that directly impact students.

Augsburg Academy for Health Careers: The Augsburg Academy will serve high school students from diverse communities who are motivated to pursue a rigorous high school academic program. Students will be prepared for a vocation in health care, for post secondary studies leading to a health care career, or for advanced studies in any program that has high standards for student academics. The Academy is affiliated with several large faith-based organizations including: Fairview Health Systems, Augsburg College, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Lutheran Social Services, Luther Seminary, and Central Lutheran Church. The Academy is committed to addressing health disparities within communities of color and helping students from these communities pursue careers in the health professions.

Great River School: Great River School will provide middle and high school students (grades 7-12) with an authentic Montessori learning environment. There are currently only a handful of authentic Montessori high schools in the world, and none in Minnesota. An internationally recognized expert in adolescent Montessori philosophy is designing the Great River School pedagogy and curriculum. This pedagogy and curriculum will strongly influence the other Star Schools.

Minnesota North Star Academy: The Minnesota North Star Academy will be the first and only non-residential high school in Minnesota to provide a bilingual-bicultural, student-centered curriculum for students who communicate using American Sign Language (ASL)--primarily those who are deaf, deaf/blind and hard-of-hearing. North Star Academy is working closely with Gallaudet University and CSD (Communication Services for the Deaf), and has strong support from the national deaf community. The North Star curriculum will provide an important new model for deaf education.
