The Star Education Center

With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Center for School Change is helping the Star Schools create an innovative structure for collaboration and pooling resources. A separate non-profit corporation, The Star Education Center, has been created. Through the Center, the Star schools are able to work together in ways that strengthen their academic programs and reduce their administrative costs. The mission of the Center is to facilitate collaboration that encourages academic best practices, and to provide quality administrative services at a cost that is far below what is currently available to charter schools. The overriding goal is to help the schools spend as much money as possible on programs that directly impact students' achievement and well-being.

The Star Education Center services include:

  • Coordinating collaboration efforts in curriculum development, special education, staff development, facilities management, marketing and enrollment, grant writing, information technology, transportation, and other areas, as determined by the participating schools.

  • Providing a full range of financial services including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, purchasing, and financial reporting.

  • Assisting with human resources management including staff recruitment and benefits administration.

  • Collecting data required by the Minnesota Department of Education and submitting the necessary reports.

  • Connecting with the Twin Cities community to encourage support for the Star Schools and to share their best practices.
