Academy Overview PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Leadership Academy for Charter and Alternative Schools is a year-long, research-based professional development opportunity for motivated educators who want to grow into leaders of excellent schools that are focused on academic achievement and growth for students.  Drawing on established best practices of adult learning, the Leadership Academy will work with cohorts of 15-20 emerging leaders over the course of a year to study, observe, reflect on, discuss, critique, and demonstrate what it is that excellent leaders do to achieve high levels of student success in schools.

The program is offered free of charge to applicants who are selected to join the cohort (application deadline for the 2008-2009 cohort is May 9th).

The overarching goals of the Leadership Academy are to offer cohort participants a leadership development program that:

  1. is based on research about what schools must do to help all students--including low income students, students of color, and English Language Learners-- attain high levels of academic achievement.

  2. helps participants understand the program components and recruitment strategies that have helped produce public charter schools with racially and socio-economically diverse student body.

  3. helps participants understand what a school must do so that all students are fully prepared for some form of post-secondary education.

  4. insures participants fully understand the major Instructional Leadership, Organizational Leadership, and School Management responsibilities of leading a Minnesota charter or alternative school.

The Leadership Academy offers participants opportunities to:

  • learn about qualities of highly-effective directors/principals and of schools that foster student achievement.

  • learn and grow within a cohort of 15-20 educators who are deeply committed to developing their leadership skills and improving student achievement.

  •  visit schools that have highly-effective directors/principals and a track record of student achievement.

  •  work with an experienced education leader/mentor over the course of the year.

  •  earn continuing education credits.

The Leadership Academy is offered by the University of Minnesota's Center for School Change, with funding from the Minnesota Department of Education (through Minnesota's Voluntary School Choice Program).
