POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT -  Education Public Policy Intern

 

 

The Minnesota Association of Charter Schools is seeking a part-time intern to support its public policy work on education issues related to charter schools in Minnesota. This is a paid internship that will begin in August and go through December 2008.

 

The public policy intern will play an important role in the Association's preparations for the 2009 legislative session by providing substantial administrative and research support.  He/she will have the opportunity to learn about public charter schools and the broad range of education policies that are affecting public education in Minnesota.

 

The successful candidate will have strong oral communications, writing and research skills, will exhibit creativity and innovative thinking, and will demonstrate effective self-direction, including the ability to manage multiple tasks.  Applicants with a strong interest in non-partisan education public policy and grassroots engagement are encouraged to apply.

 

Areas of Responsibilities

 

Research and Issue Development

·         Research and provide administrative support to the Public Policy Committee and issue working groups

·         Provide administrative and logistical support for the Association's staff, committee members and issue working groups, including transcribing notes for meetings

·         Conduct research and develop background documents on issues for the committee and working groups

·         Prepare, edit and proofread documents for the committees and working groups

Grassroots Advocacy/Engagement

·         Provide administrative support for advocacy initiatives and grassroots engagement for the Association's staff, and lobbying team

·         Participate in staffing MN Association of Charter Schools advocacy and public policy events

·         Assist with administrative projects, such as public policy mailings and development of  advocacy database

 

Skills and Experience

·         Ability to manage multiple issues and projects and prioritize responsibilities

·         Ability to work in a non-partisan arena with a variety of stakeholders and coordinate work with others

·         Strong research, writing (print and online) and oral communications skills

·         Experience and/or interest in education policy public and grassroots advocacy and engagement

·         Interest in and commitment to the mission and values of the MN Association of Charter Schools

·         An aptitude with a range of software including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and basic database management

 

Salary and Work Hours

·         Hourly compensation ranging from $10- $15 per hour based upon experience and/or academic background.

·         Approximately 15 - 20 hours a week with flexible scheduling.
