A former student’s email shocked me last week. I hope it will do the
same for you.
Karen wrote, in part, “ I can't believe it has been 36 years since I
first walked through the doors (of the school where you taught)…
educators made an impact on my future choices and you were definitely
one of them Thanks for the inspiration during my formative years. Many
thanks for all you do”
As you can imagine, this email was a huge day brighter. And it inspired
me to call one of MY former teachers. I had not talked with him in 30
years.
It felt SO good to thank him. And that’s my point. Why not make a call,
or sent an email like this, TODAY?
The man I called taught religion – but what he taught me had little to
do with formal religion. It was the late 1960’s, a very turbulent time,
and I was a college student. He helped me among other things, to
* Think for myself
* Do what I thought was ethical
* Choose a career based on what I loved, and could do well, regardless
of prestige or pay
He also helped me move on from a relationship with a bright but very
difficult young woman. I called this man to tell him how much he had
helped me. We laughed about many things that have happened over the last
30 years. He thanked me profusely for calling. I think he enjoyed the
conversation.
I definitely did.
The young woman who wrote me has created a wonderful career for herself
as a professional dancer, and teacher of a dance. As my wife can affirm,
I am NOT a great dancer. In fact, one of the things we joke about is the
time we took a dance class together. I did not do well.
Toward the end of her email, the woman who wrote me asked, “Where does
the time go?” Great question.
None of us know how much time we have. Why not take a few minutes this
week – to do something for yourself. Find a teacher who inspired,
encouraged or supported you. Call or email that person. It will be a
great gift for both of you.
