Where are the movie models for young men? Sadly people who produced a popular movie, “The Last Kiss,” really blew it.
Learning does not take place just in schools – my usual topic. This week I want to describe an opportunity lost.
‘The last Kiss” follows four young men in their twenties. Only one is married, and none of them are happily married. One is living with a woman who he has impregnated. One is deeply frustrated in his marriage. A girl friend has just broken up with a third, and he responds by going to her apartment and assaulting her new boyfriend. And the final one; he is happy sleeping around.
If you are looking for a bit of responsible action, you really won't find it in this movie. If you are looking for someone to respect, you won't find it either.
And just this week, news in the Twin Cities included one man who killed his former girlfriend and her current boyfriend.
We really need some better models for young men. We need movies where young men who can settle disagreements without getting violent, and who like making a commitment to a young woman.
Is this too much to ask? Couldn't movies be dramatic, moving, compelling, funny, and still build in some responsibility?
